Accountability (partial response to my former post on Mike Guglielmucci)

Did you know John Piper blogged? (no, I am not a Piper-freak) In fact, he blogs more faithfully than anyone I know. Also, he highly encourages all pastors to blog for 6 reasons. Many of them are the same reasons why I seek to maintain a blog. To Write, Teach, Recommend, Interact, Learn what’s worth writing, and be known.

Ok, now to my real reason for THIS post: Primarily to recommend. To recommend what? A system of accountability that John Piper and his fellow pastors developed. I don’t want to say too much. But check it out here and download it. I think this is an excellent resource and is part of what God is doing in the earth to restore the values of Holiness (I.H.O.P.) in His Bride. I love seeing God restore the same values in His bride all over the earth, it’s definitely not just an IHOP thing. I want to see what God is doing everywhere and how He’s bringing the Bride to maturity. I look at Piper’s accountablity commitment form as like the Baptist form of IHOP’s “7-fold Purity Covenant”. Yet there’s some more things I like about it that IHOP doesn’t have, including the Sabbath requirement and the diet/excericise evaluation. Yet, for some reason it doesn’t ask the question about fulfilling your sacred trust… : ).

Also, I want to recommend an internet accountability program (IHOP’s 7-fold purity covenant requires you have one installed on your computer) called “Covenant Eyes”. My family is all signed up on it and it is a very well-designed program for Mac and PC. I am also convinced that accountability programs are much more effective than internet filters because they foster self-control, self-discipline, internet integrity, and personal accountablity. Pornography thrives when you are alone, but with an accountability program that you can’t get around, you really aren’t “alone”. This is the purpose of Covenant Eyes.

“I have made a covenant with my eyes;

how then could I gaze at a virgin?

What would be my portion from God above

and my heritage from the Almighty on high?

Is not calamity for the unrighteous,

and disaster for the workers of iniquity?

Does He not see my ways

and number all my steps?” (Job 31:1-4)

All internet accountability is just pointing to this accountability before God. He really sees all the time, and He cares, and He will judge us in response to our actions. The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom.

  1. Thanks for linking to Covenant Eyes! Guglielmucci’s story does highlight the great need for pastors and leaders (everyone really) to be accountable for their secret lives.
