Oh yeah, I placed 2nd at the Bible Bee!

TrudogHere’s another updation to you all. It was a long and nervous 2 days, but IT WAS ALL WORTH IT! Not just because I placed in the top 20, top 7, and top 3 (with grueling tie-breaking rounds between us), but because I got to be a trumpet blast (even if I had to whisper) of the preciousness of God’s Word. I am so provoked by all these kids who have treasured the Word of God not only in their minds but in their hearts. This Bible Bee is not about our diligence and how awesome we are, it is about the worth of Jesus and His Words, that they really are better than life (for most of us this meant: better than friends, games, evenings, afternoons, mornings, and even junk food that would hinder us from knowing the Word).

the threeI am especially provoked by the other 2 of “the three”, Daniel Staddon and Ellen Lawrence. That was the funnest tie breaker of my life. They are crazy awesome and so humble! What kind of competitors root for you to win, even though knowing that your loss is their gain?! Thank you all for supporting me. I am abundantly blessed and have absolutely no reason of remorse for even getting 2nd. In the end we are all headed for a wedding feast (Rev. 19) and we will rejoice that we won the greatest competition, the competition that begins today, when after you walk out of J.W. Marriott, whether win or lose, and you press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus (Phil. 3). It is the prize of being pleasing to Jesus, of being seen by Him when no one else sees you. It won’t matter if you’re really smart or get F’s, if you’re young or old, male or female, if you embrace today that narrow way of love, of keeping and teaching (live it and speak it) His commandments, you will be GREAT (Mt. 5:19). I tell you what, our hearts are desperate to be seen, to be noticed, to be great. And yet mystery of mysteries, the greatest glory is found in serving your brother/sister/mother/father (Mt. 22:36-40, Gal. 5:13-14). Then God is going to CROWN YOU (2 Tim. 4:7-8, Rev. 2:10)! God is going to HONOR YOU (1 Pet. 1:7)! Your resurrected body will shine because of the love you displayed in the secret place (Mt. 6:1-18, Dan. 12:3). Know that, as I said in the final round, “Jesus is interceding for us right now” (Rom. 8:34), He is praying that in this race of faith (1 Tim. 6:11-12, Heb. 12:1-2, Phil. 3:11-16, 1 Cor. 9:24-27), your faith would not fail (Luke 22:34-31)! So, as Paul did not cease to pray, may we also pray (even if it be in constant 15 second prayers) that we would be “strengthened with all power, according to His glorious might, for the attaining of all steadfastness and patience (endurance) with joy” -Col. 1:11 Whether you are a full-time mother, a pastor, a student, a kid, a full-time businessman, do not be deceived! If you faithfully sow to the Spirit (by talking with Him, yielding to, and obeying Him as He teaches you to love and serve), you will reap eternal life and greatness in the age to come (Mt. 20:26-28). Do not grow weary in doing good, for in due time we shall reap if we do not loose heart (Gal. 6:7-10)!

  1. Truman, We are so proud of you, Jerome and all 298 kids who competed in the National Bible Bee. Thank you for praying for me in the prayer room on Thursday’s opening day. I’m so excited about your generation of radical Jesus lovers. My prayers is that all the Abrahams, Isaacs and Jacobs are able to link together generationally to impact our world for the Kingdom of God. We love you and maybe will visit IHOP in the near future.

  2. Hey again,
I don’t know if you’ll remember me but I just wanted to thank you for setting the example in word and deed at Bible Bee! I’m so glad you made it to the finals!
    Sola Deo Gloria!
I’d love to hang out around your website and grow in God with you!
May God bless your plans for the coming year!

  3. Congratulations Truman, that is so awesome getting 2nd in the nation! Majorly impressive and provoking. I am happy you are happy. And even happier you are home. 🙂

The team literally fell apart Thursday without you. Jared got struck with a sudden sickness and had to leave the stage for the remainder of the set and for 20 minutes singers and musicians were leaving and coming back, then leaving again. It was chaos and I blame it entirely on your absence. So never leave again, unless ya know… there’s another bible bee or something… Then I guess that’s okay.

Anyway you rock and congrats again. You deserve it with all of your hard work and devotion.

  4. Hey Truman,
Congrats on making 2nd in the national Bible Bee competition! My twin made 1st in the local and my best friend made 2nd and I made 4th. 🙂
My friends and I watched part of the Bible Bee live on Friday and we were amazed at how well you all did! It was so great watching you all and seeing teens quoting God’s Word! Well done! God can do anything through anyone!
We felt bad for you when we heard you speak. My best friend was saying that you probably stayed up the night(s) before studying the verses. Did you really have a sore throat? Way to stick to it!
By the way, I’m on chapter 8 in ‘Do Hard Things’. I thought it was cool that you read it and it motivated you to keep on going w/ the Bible Bee!! 😀 I’m working on a piano duet. I’ve never composed one before so it’s quite a challenge! I just got done writing 8 or 10 messures in 2 or 1/2 hours. Few! That book motivated me to do more.
    Congratulations, Truman!

  5. Hi Truman,

Congratulations once again on a fantastic job at Bible Bee Nationals! It was a pleasure competing with you. I can already see God’s word has deep roots in your soul. You radiate His love! Keep living a shameless life that brings glory to Jesus Christ and to His Word. God bless you!

    In Christ,

  6. Truman,

Congratulations! I thoroughly enjoyed watching all of you up on stage stating God’s word. (I judge Primary on Thursday and had the pleasure of just being in the moment with all of you on Friday – no kids competing to worry about, this year)! It was truly awesome. I wanted to up and give you some hot tea and some cough drops throughout out the day, but chose to pray that God would see you through. Everyone did so well. I know how hard it is, as I was proud of my son for memorizing 60 or more verses, not nearly what those of you at the Senior and Junior levels recited. May God continue to use you, your knowledge and your talents to grow and nurture his kingdom!

Amy Evans – LPC in Norcross, GA (All my family grew up in Adrian, MO so I had to cheer for you and Rebecca)! God Bless you all!!

  7. Congratulations, Truman! You did such a great job last week. I was impressed with the way you spoke those passages—you didn’t just recite them, you spoke them from within yourself.

May you continue your life studying the Word of God!

  8. Way to go, Truman! It was such a blessing to get to know you even a little at Bible Bee! Your love for God was so evident and passionate–it was encouraging to meet those who radiate with Christ! I would say “continue loving God and serving Him” but I know you will. Continue striving every day, even when the days are tough. I’m sure being an intercessory missionary at IHOP will grow you even more! Wow! Isn’t God AMAZING? He never gets boring—EVER!!!!!!!

Let your live be a pebble, rippling over and over to impact the world. Learn it, Live it, Speak it! Know Him well, and make Him well known.

Oh, yeah, hope your voice gets better:)
Also, I’ll pray for you as you get publicity and attention that pride doesn’t try to get a grip on your soul! Use the shield of faith which quenches all the fiery darts (Ephesians 6:10-18)

  9. Hi Truman,

I was and continue to be so proud to say I know you! You have done excellent!
God continue to poor His Goodness and Grace over you and into you and through you!

  10. Hey Truman! I didn’t know you had a blog. This is awesome! But I think you got something backwards. As I remember, it was you who were always encouraging the rest of us on! And even when you lost your voice! Thank you so much for being such an inspiration to me, and making the entire experience a fun one for everyone involved.

You aren’t going to believe this. We drove home from the competition Sunday, and it hit me terrible Monday morning. I was sick for two days straight! I can’t imagine what would have happened if it had come just a few days sooner. I would have been out of it for the entire competition. I am sooo grateful the Lord kept us healthy!

Any tips on how to keep the memory passages fresh? How do you plan to use them now that the Bible Bee’s over? I’d appreciate any ideas you have!

P.S. No problem with the photo. (Isn’t it kind of funny how different our expressions are? 🙂 ) God be with you and keep living life to the fullest!

  11. Hey Truman: This is Joshua from the Bible Bee. It was great to get to know you at the Bee. You did an incredible job at the finals! It was a serious nail biter for us when they called the names of the senior semi-finalists and the top three. Hope to see you in Kansas City for IHOP!

  12. I guess I’m a little late in sending my congratulations, but once I found your blog, I couldn’t help but comment. 🙂 After watching all the work Daniel put into preparing for the final competition, I can truly take my hat off to anyone who made it to the Finals, especially the second place prize holder. Continue living the conqueror’s life! “With God, all things are possible.” Matt. 19:26 (or do I even need to put a reference?).

  13. Congrats again, Truman–it was great watching you compete. I was encouraged by your perserverence and your obvious love for God’s word! If anyone is interested in signing a petition to add a college age category to the National Bible Bee, please email me at biblebeepetition@gmail.com! I’m working to collect as many signatures as possible from as many states as possible!

  14. Hey Truman,

I was greatly encouraged by your vibrant Christian testimony at the Bee. It was so neat to be able to get to know you. Your blog is awesome!! Thanks for all the encouragement you gave to all of us. I wish you the best in your missionary work. I hope this event has encouraged all of us to use our lives for God. God bless you! Uriah

  15. Hi Truman,
I just wanted to let you know that you were really encouraging at the National Bible Bee. Thanks for the big smile as I was going into my first oral round and for the thumbs-up to me even though YOU were the one who was advancing to semi-finals and even though you didn’t even know me. I really enjoyed watching you in finals and my family at home was cheering for you too! May God bless your ministry as you keep following HIM!
